Agua sin Contaminantes - Safe Drinking Water

Químicos para siempre (PFAS) y Microplásticos -
Forever Chemicals (PFAS) and Microplastics

Have you ever used non-stick pans, eaten food from pizza boxes or fast-food wrappers, or worn a waterproof jacket? Chances are, you’ve been exposed to PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances), a group of harmful chemicals found in everyday products, our environment, and even the water we drink. These “forever chemicals” are difficult to break down and can have serious health impacts, including certain cancers, thyroid disease, high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, decreased fertility, low birth weight in infants, and developmental delays.

PFAS contamination affects communities across Wisconsin, with hotspots in Marathon and Waukesha counties. In Dane County, PFAS has been detected in soil, municipal and private wells, surface water, and groundwater. Notably, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources has identified Starkweather Creek, which flows into Lake Monona, as having high concentrations of PFOA and PFOS.

At Wisconsin EcoLatinos, we are dedicated to protecting the health of our communities through education and empowerment. Before our outreach, 70% of the community was unaware of the impacts of PFAS. We create and lead events, campaigns, and resources in Spanish that provide information and tools to reduce exposure to these contaminants. Our initiatives include giving educational presentations, hosting outdoor activities, and organizing fun, educational events like our annual kayaking event at Lake Wingra, where families can enjoy nature while learning about water quality and PFAS. Additionally, we have donated over 160 water filters to help community members minimize the risk of PFAS in their own home.

We also advocate for policies that protect our communities. For example, we supported the Private Well Owners Right to Know law, which requires the DNR to notify local health officials about groundwater contamination, helping families stay safe and informed.

Together, through education, outreach, and policy advocacy, we work to ensure that our community is a healthy and safe environment for everyone.
